Presumably the actual dried grass plants included have been in the book since publication which is remarkable, especially considering what wonderful condition they are in. A previous owner has written rare on the front free endpaper and this may be true as there are only 3 copies of this the first edition in Copac.

No author or date though the paper is water-marked 1809. Appears to be written for a Society and describes in detail agriculture and commerce and mentioning local landowners and their improvements in the beginning of the 19th century.

Was attributed to Nathaniel Bailey and then John Worlidge but Fussell has doubts about either.

This is not the usual disbound section but a published book covering the agriculture of the Encyclopaedia with its own title page and author, these details repeated on the front cover. On the back cover is a long explanation of how the Encyclopaedia was published.

An interesting pair of volumes. Vol I has Essay I & Essay II and vol II has Essays III to IX. Rothamsted only has the two Essays in volume I and the later Essay IIl published in 1810. Perkins has the 1910 volume with Essays III to IX but does not have volume I. These 2 in the catalogues appear to be first editions of both books in matching binding and must be very scarce.

These county reports vary a lot in content, some have no plates, this has 28 with the map. The counties also vary in their scarcity and Oxford appears to be one of the scarcer ones. I have only had one other copy of the Agriculture of Oxford and it is the same copy as it was in a collection that came back to me when the previous owner passed away.

The Hundreth Good Points of Husbandrie was Tusser's first agricultural work, later amplified into The Five Hundreth Points. The advertisment in this copy comments that ''the first edition of 1557 exhibits the prima stamina of this work....One other recommendation the present copy may have, that it is less tedious than the poem in its last state, and preserves all the vigour of the original conception, which future expansion never fails to weaken.''

Original Tussers are hard to read as spelling when published had not been formalised and the books were usually printed in black letter. This produces Tussers original text but with extensive notes and explanations by Mavor. All in very nice condition.

Each book 9 x 6 inches. The circulars very from a few pages to quite thick items. All to do with agriculture though a few will refer to purely American problems. Others like Breeds of Sheep or Breeds of Heavy Horses are universal. Some-one called D M Daniel has had these pamphlets bound into unirom blacl half leather with black cloth sides, raised bands, gilt lettering. An typed index of the contents of each volume is bound in the front. Vary from Very Good to Fine and would look well on the shelf. All 9 volumes for £450.00 including postage. £450

The plates include Devon cattle and sheep of the county. These county agricultural reports vary greatly in the number of illustrations and amount of detail from no plates to quite large numbers as in this case, and a great deal of detail as is also the case with this report..

As often said before the scarcest items are the small pamphlets, few were robust enough to survive, in this case almost 140 years. Those that do survive are usually bound in volumes with other pamphlets. This one has managed on its own.
